Jewish cemetery in Uman

Photographic documentation of the site

The cemetery was probably established in the 19th century. It is divided into two parts: new and old. A gate leads to the new part of the cemetery, with a pre-burial house to the left of the entrance. The older part of the cemetery (adjacent to the new part on the west side) is fenced off. The most common headstones in the new part of the cemetery take the form of contemporary granite or terrazzo graves. The gravestones, which date back to the second half of the 20th century, take the form of small obelisks. The cemetery has a regular arrangement of alleys. The older part of the cemetery is overgrown with tall grass, and only a few gravestones are visible. According to estimates, there are more than 500 gravestones from the 19th-20th centuries, 75% of which are damaged or abandoned. There are no mass graves here.
