Jewish Crafts School in Łódź

Photographic documentation of the site

At the end of the 19th century, wealthy Łódź industrialists active in the Talmud-Torah organisation, led by Izrael Poznański, Markus Silberstein, Salomon Barciński, Herman Konstadt and Zygmunt Jarociński, took the initiative to establish a craftsmen's school for poor Jews. Thanks to the financial commitment of the initiators, a Talmud-Torah school was established in 1890. It was located in a tenement building at 20 Zachodnia Street. However, it soon became apparent that the building could not accommodate all those who wanted to come. Therefore, a new, larger building was planned. The plot of land for the new school and a substantial sum for the construction work was donated by Zygmunt Jarociński. Other industrialists also supported the project. A new three-storey building with a beautifully decorated roof was built according to a design by Gustaw Landau-Gutenteger at 46/48 Średnia Street (currently Pomorska Street). During the inauguration of the first school year, Zygmunt and Berta Jarociński funded a special scholarship.
