Jewish Man Reading

Majcher, Alojzy (1907-1943)

The autolithograph Jewish Man Reading by Alojzy Majcher, an artist from Tarnów, shows a bust of a man in quarter profile. A small part of the bearded man's face is visible. He is wearing round glasses and a classic dark hat with a flat brim. Attached to his forehead is a tefillin – a leather box containing Torah fragments written on parchment, which, according to Jewish tradition, men put on during morning prayer. There is also a prayer shawl slung over the man's left shoulder (Tallit). A prayer book is probably lying in front of the man. In the frame, right next to the lower left corner of the composition, is the author's inscription: "autolithograph”. In the lower right corner, at the same height, there is a signature: "AMajcher".
