Józef Haller

Gottlieb, Leopold (1879-1934)

The official portrait of the Commander-in-Chief of all the Polish Armed Forces, Józef Haller (1873-1960), in a seated position. Artistically, it definitely differs from other portraits in that it depicts the Legionary Commander. It can be assumed that, unlike the other portraits in the portfolio, this one was not created as a result of a drawing session. Gottlieb may have never met Haller on his Legion journey, and the portrait may have been painted in order to complete the whole portfolio of commanders. The Carpathian Brigade under Haller's command defended the Russian Army's access to Hungary. | AT
