Karpaty. Wyżnica

Rolke, Tadeusz (1929- )

In this black and white photograph, taken in Ukraine near Vyzhnytsia in the Carpathians, Tadeusz Rolke managed to capture the majesty of the Carpathian forest, its continuance despite wars, murders, tragedies. Strong, graphic contrasts of black, leafless branches and trunks of trees, straight and tall against the snow-covered slope, add to the mood of solemnity. In the upper line, their crowns devoid of leaves merge into a dense, dark patch. This winter landscape is, at the same time, a photographic elegy. Renata Piątkowska
