Kazimierz Dolny – parish church

Cukier, Aniela (1900-1944)

The painting from 1929 (watercolour, pencil, paper, 22.5 x 17 cm) presents a main facade of a parish church. The drawing is highly simplified, the forms are treated synthetically. There are two houses in the foreground, dark pink on the left and blue on the right, with a grey fence in front of them. Higher up, there is a centrally located parish church with dark beige walls. Dense stylised trees are placed around it. The colour scheme of the work is matt and very intense. In the lower right-hand corner, there is a signature: "Aniela Cukierówna 1929".

Aniela Cukierówna (or Cukier; 1900-1944) - a painter and graphic artist from an assimilated Jewish family. She studied at the private school of Konrad Krzyżanowski and at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts. She created easel paintings, stained glass, drawings and woodcuts, but most of her works were graphics. She also published articles, e.g., in the magazine "Arkady". She attended open-air workshops in Krzemieniec and Kazimierz Dolny. She died during the Second World War, due to mental and physical exhaustion.
