Kazimierz Sosnkowski

Gottlieb, Leopold (1879-1934)

The official portrait of one of the commanders of the 1st Brigade of the Polish Legions, Kazimierz Sosnkowski (1885-1969), without the insignia on the collar (the portrait, like other portraits of legionary commanders, was probably created during a dispute with the Austrian High Command of the Army over the marking of officers' ranks). The lithographic portrait of Kazimierz Sosnkowski was the fourth portrait of him made by Gottlieb. Thus, next to Piłsudski, the Chief of Staff of the First Brigade became the person most frequently portrayed by Gottlieb among the Legion's leaders. In the last weeks of 1914, after Gottlieb was assigned to the 1st Brigade's manning, his talent was to be used by Colonel Sosnkowski, known for his love of music and the fine arts. | AT
