Kiddush glass

A small cylindrical glass (cup) with a rounded base. It is 9 cm high and 5.5 cm wide, with an engraved zig-zag ornament at the edge. A cartouche decoration with surrounding geometric floral decoration is visible on the central wall of the vessel. The underside of the vessel bears graphic symbols of the so-called small hallmark: in an oval field, a mark with the head of a woman facing left and wearing a headscarf tied back and the silver hallmark "3" (third silver hallmark 800/1000, i.e. 80%) and the emblem of the Warsaw assay office in the form of the Greek letter "W", as well as the goldsmith's name mark "KiM" in a rectangular field with slightly rounded edges.

Kiddush cups (goblets, glasses) are vessels for red wine used in homes for ritual purposes, usually on the evening before Shabbat. The master of the house, starting the festive season, would recite kiddush (Hebrew: "sanctification"; Yiddish: kiddesh) over a cup of sweet red wine in the presence of the whole family. He would then drink much of the wine and share the rest with his household and guests. Depending on the wealth of the family, the cup could take the form of a goblet, a cup or even a glass or metal mug.

The item has been in the Museum's collection since 1971, and underwent conservation in 2021.
