Kobiety i dzieci (Women and children)

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

Woodcut from the period of Olga (née Binder)'s studies at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. It was preserved among the works for the book "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased). It can be presumed that the storage location of the work (and a draft version of it, also in the museum's collection, see MPOLIN-M1650) is no coincidence. It was most likely the artist's own work that was an important inspiration for her when working on the "Ręka umarłej” (Hand of a Deceased) project, especially at the initial, conceptual stage.

The hypothesis of the reference role of the work for the "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased) project seems to be confirmed by the affinity with various illustrations from the project, such as: the frame of the foreground women's faces (hair or scarves), referring to old portraits, visible in many of the illustrations; the arrangement of children's bodies held in their arms and stretching their hands towards the woman – very similar to that used in the illustrations for Władysław Broniewski's poem "Ballad" (see MPOLIN-M1623, MPOLIN-M1624) and unpublished versions of the illustrations for the story "Dzieci za drutami" (MPOLIN-M1621, MPOLIN-M1622). At the time of the donation of the set of works to the POLIN Museum for the book "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased), the object was in a paper frame measuring 31.7 x 26.4 cm.
