Koncert (Concert) – unpublished version (I)

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

A version of the illustration – not selected by the artist for print – for Maria Zarębińska-Broniewska's short story "Koncert" (Concert) (cf. MPOLIN-M1636), dedicated to an orchestra composed of female prisoners of the Auschwitz camp. The illustration is painted in a colour version (distinguished from the final version published in the book, dominated by black and white with only a slight addition of brown), although, as in all similar illustrations, within a limited colour palette.

The composition of the image in the form of a vertical rectangle was defined using pencil-drawn lines. By outlining the hairline around the top of the heads, the appearance of the figures seems to refer to Renaissance portraits.

The irregular outer edges of the painted brown frame (strong streaks of black are also visible on the right and at the bottom) are related to the illustrator's lack of care in closing the outer parts of the composition, the artistic processing of which was to be handled by the publisher's graphic designers at the stage of preparing the book's typesetting.
