Koncert (Concert) – unpublished version (II)

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

A version of the illustration for the short story "Koncert" (Concert) by Maria Zarębińska-Broniewska, which was not selected for publication by Olga Siemaszko (cf. MPOLIN-M1636, MPOLIN-M1637). This is the most drastic version of the three artworks preserved in the artist's archive: many of the orchestra members depicted as Auschwitz prisoners have skulls in place of their heads. Faces and skulls are depicted in tonal white, the rest of the silhouettes are mostly brown, the background is mostly black.

This is the only illustration in the entire project to feature a surreal motif of skulls in terms of the depiction of people.
