Landscape with houses and sailboats - a woodcut block

Szwarc, Marek (1892-1958)

The landscape with houses and boats with sails, carved in hardboard, is a matrix from which the finished graphics are reflected. This is one of the most interesting exhibits in the POLIN Museum collection. The inconspicuous, small form allows us to see the artist's workshop. In this matrix, there are grooves with uneven, sharp edges, and deep cuts made with a knife and a chisel, which have created an expressive landscape. By adjusting the depth of the cut, the artist obtained a strong value differentiation of black and white contrasts. This simple and uncomplicated technique made it possible to create explicit scenes. Graphic prints are usually made on a hand press, therefore, the fibreboard was glued with cork, which relieved the pressure of the press.
