Cukier, Aniela (1900-1944)

The painting from the 1930s, (oil, canvas, 54 x 66 cm) presents a landscape with a parish church viewed from the Three Crosses Mountain. In the foreground, on the left, there is a top of a tall tree and a brown building of the former bell tower behind. In the middle, there are some green trees, and on the left - former stables, a garden and a churchman's house. A little further, a central parish church with bright red roof and yellow walls is presented, surrounded by green trees, viewed from the side of the chancel. On both sides of the parish church, there are the red roofs of houses. The blue and grey Vistula River is visible in the distance, there is a strip of green and yellow field and a grey and blue sky above it. There is no signature.

Aniela Cukierówna (or Cukier; 1900-1944) - a painter and graphic artist from an assimilated Jewish family. She studied at the private school of Konrad Krzyżanowski and at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts. She created easel paintings, stained glass, drawings and woodcuts, but most of her works were graphics. She also published articles, e.g., in the magazine "Arkady". She attended open-air workshops in Krzemieniec and Kazimierz Dolny. She died during the Second World War, due to mental and physical exhaustion.
