Landscape with trees - a woodcut block

Szwarc, Marek (1892-1958)

During his activity in the Jung Idysz group (1919–1920), Marek Szwarc created mainly graphic works and drawings. We know them, among others, from the pages of the "Jung Idysz" almanac; two of them – The Crucifixion (MPOLIN-M33) and The Female Nude (MPOLIN-M35) – are in the collections of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. In graphic arts, Szwarc then most often used the technique of negative linocut, introducing a strong deformation of shapes, so characteristic of expressionism. In 1920, the artist began a period of close cooperation with the Poznań expressionist group Bunt (1917–1925), then he lived with his wife in Puszczykowo near Poznań. At that time, he created a series of graphic landscapes referring to the poetic-dreamlike works of Marc Chagall, and nudes, studies of women and works on religious topics. Two matrices with landscape representations (see MPOLIN - M797) from the POLIN Museum collection probably come from this period. Modest and seemingly plain, they are a unique material, testimony to the skilled artisanal aspect of the artist's work.
