Late Captain Kazimierz Piątek Herwin (on bier in Pensławice)

Gottlieb, Leopold (1879-1934)

This modest drawing by Leopold Gottlieb is a portrait of captain Kazimierz Piątek, alias Herwin (1886 - 1915) lying on the bier. He was the leader of the First Cadre Company of Polish Legions. Herwin was wounded on 19 May 1915, during the fights that took place over the hill of Kozinek-Płaczkowice in the Battle of Konary. He was transported to the military lazaretto in Pęcławice Górne where he died the next day. Description of Herwin’s death can be found in Seweryn Romin’s book illustrated by Gottlieb (S. Romin, Z notatek legionisty, Krakow 1916).

The drawing, previously unknown to research, has an interesting history. It was kept in the private collection of a former legionary, Henryk Dulęba, who collected documents, souvenirs and photos connected to his time in the legion, Józef Piłsudski and the Polish Legions.
