Gabriel Lawit was born in 1945 in the Soviet Union (most probably in Magadan, the actual place is unknown), where his parents were evacuated to. He was repatriated to Poland together with his parents. Initially, the family tried to return to their family town of Wrocław, however, as their flat had been taken over by a Polish family, they settled in the so-called “Recovered Territories” in Dzierżoniów, where the mother of the Interviewee (a dentist educated in Nancy before the war) took over a German dental surgery, and the father (a chemist by education) was employed in a textile mill. Gabriel Lawit spent his childhood in Dzierżoniów.
In September 1971, he emigrated to Copenhagen, where his future wife joined him a year later.
