Bakalarz, Jasmine (1985- )

part of the collection

Portrait of a fair-haired girl from the series "Warsaw Portraits". It was her parents who decided to have her pose for a photographic certificate of her identity. The photograph evokes associations regarding the stereotypical appearance of people of Jewish origin. As Iwona Kurz writes in the catalogue of the exhibition "Obecność/brak/ślady” (Presence/ Absence/Traces), where the whole series was presented: " ... it is difficult to reject the associations that come from memory and knowledge of the past – recalling, for example, the occupational risks associated with 'appearance' ... ". Bakalarz, who is the author of a series of photographs documenting the lives of children in various social environments, naturally included not only adults in her project.
