Leon Berbecki

Gottlieb, Leopold (1879-1934)

The portrait of Leon Berbecki (1874-1963), in the years 1914-1916 commander of the 5th Legionary Infantry Regiment, whose infantrymen for their merits in battle were informally called "zuchowcy" by Józef Piłsudski. Gottlieb was assigned to the staff of that very regiment. | Berbecki took on the role of patron for some of the Legion's artists (including the sculptor Włodzimierz Konieczny). He assigned Gottlieb a space at the front for a miniature studio, where the artist was to portray legionnaires at specific times. Berbecki also established a system for evaluating artistic works, authenticating them (according to his own and other commanders' assessment) with the official regimental stamp. We can see it on many of Gottlieb's drawings. | AT
