Letter to Anna Zimmermann (II)

Natalia asks her sister Anna Zimmermann about her husband and son: "write to me about Ispun, how your son is too - the only almost descendant of our whole family. Sabina's children died together with her, martyred by German executioners at Majdanek. Majdanek is one of those murderous camps arranged by the Germans on Polish territory. (Majdanek, Treblinka, Bełżec, Sobibor). (...) Our brother Staś was married to a beautiful girl from Nowy Sącz and he lived there recently. That is why I do not know anything about him. Maybe he is somewhere in the world. (...) Dear Andzia! How lucky that our parents died before this terrible catastrophe. We buried them though, and their ashes are in the grave. And all the others? They died so tragically burnt in the crematoria. Their ashes were used to produce artificial fertiliser - German cynicism went so far. The ashes of our loved ones fertilised our fields. I am not writing you the details, because why should you be as heartbroken as I am. I cannot return to balance, hence my illness". (The letter from Natalia Zajczyk to Anna Zimmermann, 28 November 1945). | Renata Piątkowska
