Letter to Anna Zimmermann (VII)

On 29 April 1948, alarmed by the news of the fighting in Palestine, Natalia Zajczyk wrote from Warsaw to her sister Anna Zimmermann, who lived in Jerusalem: "Dear Anna! How hard it is that I don't know what's going on with you! When the radio broadcasts the news that there is bloodshed among you, my heart freezes. My dearest! Hold on and do not lose heart! We must prevail - justice must be done. We must get our own corner of the world after centuries of wandering. (...) I feel much better. But what does my health mean now, compared to what is happening to you? Dear, I feel so sorry for you that you have to suffer so much in fear for Ispus [Anna's son - R.P.]. (...) My whole soul is with you. Not only me. All Jews of the world are with you! A fortnight ago I attended a lecture by Dr [Rafał] Mahler. He is Szymek's friend. He told us a lot about your relations. There was a solemn atmosphere in the hall!!!" (The letter from Natalia Zajczyk to Anna Zimmermann, 29 April 1948).

On 14 May 1948 the state of Israel proclaimed its independence. Renata Piątkowska
