Letter to Emanuel Justman

A letter to Emanuel Justman from his family in Warsaw - from his sister Bluma Justman. The content: sister informs her brother that she has no contact with her sister, Paulina Włodawer, who left Lutsk (this is the period when she was sent to Siberia). She also writes: “It turns out that you did very wisely [when leaving - add. ed.], and the remorse is tormenting you unnecessarily. If you were here, you would not help much, and there you have a chance to become an independent person who can still be of use to us and others. […] I am surprised that you regret so much your pre-war life, which was really far from ideal ”(see Emmanuel's later remarks from the seventh letter to Paulina Włodawer, dated 24 May 1942 - about the change of his condition in the East).

At the end of the letter, an understatement: “Everybody is well at home. We had a tragic incident with father, which is fortunately a thing of the past. Possibly, one day you will find out what it was.” Explanation of this fragment from the diary of Paulina Włodawer (MPOLIN-A4.1.1, entry of 21 November 1980): "Indeed, "one day", because after many years, I found out, and from the outsiders as well. As far as I was told correctly, a piece of coal fell from the balcony, which must have hit some passing Boche. Naturally, nothing happened to the Boche, but they immediately burst into the apartment, screaming, stomping, with threats, and took Father with them. If it had happened later, nothing would have saved him from dying, but then we still managed to get him out, after a longer, but I don't know how long, time. Some valuables were collected from all the relatives, from the closer and the more distant ones (mine really had nothing), and somehow he was bought out. I can only imagine what they experienced then, and what their everyday life was like, I cannot even imagine, especially when the news stopped coming and life turned into a nightmare. ''
