Letter to the Glocer sisters

part of the collection

Letter from Bronisława Roller to her sisters on 1 page. From the body of the letter (original spelling): “I bet you’re interested in how I live here? Well, America, or rather N. York is an awful city. It’s noisy, dirty, loud and there’s really nothing to put the eye on when you are tired of the greyness. But it would be a great sin to complain, so I try to be delighted with everything, even with the heat, which is unbearable. Stefan works hard, he leaves the house at 8 a.m. and return at 6 p.m., sometimes even later. Housing here is awful unless you spend $100 a month, as this is how much it costs to pay for 2 furnished rooms in a good neighbourhood. Life is relatively cheap and clothing cost almost nothing. I bought myself 4 good dresses for $30. Generally, everything is tawdry and you certainly need a lot of money to see this different America and the Americans we, in Europe, have heard about. Apart from that, it’s all riff-raff and you mostly see people looking like Roma Milrad, the butcher from Ogrodowa Street. In short, it’s a terrible difference compared to England. But these days it’s like a sin to speak about it all this way.”
