Letter from Marek Szwarc to Gina Szwarc

In Scotland, where he served from 1940, Marek Szwarc did not immediately return to art. It was not only a matter of lack of time and materials for creative work. Initially, he found military service exhausting and tedious, and perhaps his fellow soldiers were not an "interesting" subject. He wrote to his wife: "I don't send to Wiad. Polsk. [Polish News], because I can't do war drawings and have no inspiration to do anything. However, if something comes to my mind, I will take up your invitation." Later, however, drawing (the only thing available to him at the time) portraits of his colleagues or scenes from the barracks was a joy and respite for him.
