Letter from Marek Szwarc to Gina Szwarc

It is difficult to imagine the nearly fifty-year-old Marek Szwarc in active military service. Nevertheless, he served faithfully from November 1939 to 1944, first in France (see mini note 14), then in the Polish Army in Great Britain. Several hundred letters from Szwarc to his wife and daughter in London, who managed to get to England via Portugal and Gibraltar, have survived his time in Scotland. Written almost daily, the letters to his wife, in Polish, sometimes in French, are a testimony to Szwarc's spiritual life, his fervent faith, the enormity of his love for Gina and Tereska: "My dear and beloved wife. I await your letter. It is the central moment in my life here. Night and day are divided between experiencing the letter's contents until the arrival of the next message from you, dearest. I see you administering our whole life. Everything was held in your limp arms. And now in your hands rests not only that which concerns you but the three of us'. (original spelling).
