Letter from Marek Szwarc to Gina Szwarc

For soldiers thousands of miles away from home and their loved ones, every message, every letter was of great importance, a sign of life, a bond with their country. Only some of them were lucky enough to have their families in Great Britain with them. Marek Szwarc was one of the lucky few ones; his wife and daughter reached London (via Portugal). In one of his letters, Szwarc described the scene of receiving the letters: "My dearest Ginusia. I received three letters at once, dated 24, 26, 27 VI. After reading the order, the chief said: 'well now mail as usual to whom?'. And everyone answered in a chorus 'for Szwarc'. I blushed, walked up, saluted and collected your dear letters" (original spelling).
