Letter from Marek Szwarc to Gina Szwarc

The monotony of soldiering in Scotland (the 1st Polish Corps was deployed there in 1940 to protect the Scottish coast of the North Sea) was interrupted by letters written and received from his wife and daughter. One letter from Marek began: "Sweet. I am off night duty. I stood the night in this forest by moonlight. Everything was asleep around [you]. I stood here, and you stood by me. I saw you, Teresa and all the loved ones in the rosary recited on the fingers of one hand and the other". He ended with the description: "It was raining, and now it has stopped. It wasn't cold - and now I'm sitting here in the canteen, having eaten dinner, drunk coffee. I didn't want to go to St. Andrews too late. So I sit and write to my beloved wife. I ask God that you find silence, energy and hope. I still believe that time will pass quickly, and I will be with you again. This time - forever. These are the last moments of the agony of separation - Believe me" (original spelling).
