Letter from Marek Szwarc to Gina Szwarc

The war letters are an ongoing conversation between Marek and Gina, although we rarely hear Gina Szwarcowa's voice (only a few of her letters have survived). On their pages, there are questions about Gina's everyday life, whether she has already bought new shoes and very often there is the recurring question: "How are you doing at work? Mainly take your time and work methodically. Let you care first and foremost about working and not finishing. Mock fame. If the work is unworthy of print - then I will in no way agree to publish it" (letter from Marek Szwarc to Gina Szwarc of 23 August [1941]; original spelling). Szwarc asks whether his wife has received the sent remuneration and what is happening with Tereska. The letters show heartfelt concern for his wife and daughter. Marek explains to Gina why he did not ask to be released from his service or work at the farm: "I volunteered for farm work myself. I am happy with it. The work is not hard; we pluck flax. I get two shillings a day, and I am as healthy as ever. My kidneys don't hurt, even though I work seven hours a day. We don't live in tents, and I won't ask to be released until I'm 50 (emphasised in the text, a letter from Marek Szwarc to Gina Szwarc dated 9 September [1941?]; original spelling).
