Letter to Samuel Szczekacz

part of the collection

The letter of the well-known avant-garde typographer Jan Tschichold (1902-1974), written in Basel and dated 29 May 1939, was sent to the "Szcekacz Szmuel" at the Jerusalem address of the Hebrew University. It is a reply to a letter from Szczekacz, who had sent Tschichold one of his "Teka Malarska" [Paintings portfolio] with his own lithographs. His address was probably given to Szczekacz by Strzemiński, who corresponded with Tschichold and in 1932 organised an exhibition in Łódź with his participation. He also edited one of Tschichold's publications, which, under the title Modern Printing, was published in Łódź in 1938.

In a letter to Szczekacz, the author of "New Typography" praises Tschichold's work and writes that it made a "pleasing impression" on him. He also writes that he had the opportunity to meet Hans Arp and show him the portfolio he sent, and gives the artist's French address (Jean Arp) in Meudon. He advises sending him the painting portfolio for possible publication in the journal "Plastique", edited by Sophie Tauber-Arp. | RP
