Letter to Tadeusz Perl

part of the collection

A letter from his sister, who, after separating from her husband, returned from the eastern regions of the former Republic of Poland to Warsaw, to her parents (Stanisław Wohl evacuated further east after the outbreak of the German-Soviet war). The letter predates the establishment of the Warsaw Ghetto. The family is doing well, with the sister even signalling that there is no need to send parcels. They live in a rented room in Powiśle, Warsaw. Return address (to Maria Karczmarek; we do not know if the family rented a room from her or used her address as a safer one for sending parcels) and Tadeusz Perl's address as recorded by Leon Perl.

Content:

Dear Tadziunio, I'm at home with our parents. Daddy is as busy and cheerful as ever. Mummy's happier now that I'm here. All is well at home in general. We've received your card and parcel; thanks a lot, but if it's giving you a lot of trouble, don't send any more because it's not necessary. I'm glad you got to tutor Marek's children, and I wonder how long the money you earn there will last you.

Life is quiet here. It's a bit boring, but I'm happy to be with our old folks – I'm going to look for a job now because I'm a tad too old to live off them. We live in one room, but it's still quite pleasant. As I'm the youngest, they treat me like a child, which, admittedly, is not that unpleasant in your parents' home. Warmest kisses

J.
