Letter to Tadeusz Perl

part of the collection

A letter from the father from the Warsaw Ghetto, late June 1942. Address details written in his hand, with the return address – as in each letter – of Maria Karczmarek, Powiśle, Warsaw.

Content (spelling has been partially updated):

My Dear! We got Ovomaltina [a Swiss chocolate product] with sugar 2 weeks ago – a bit caked because it's not in a tin box, and so it's pretty awkward to eat. Today, a new batch of Ovomaltina arrived in a box, in a powdered state. Thank you. Ala and I will eat it. For the past few days, she's been ill with bronchitis, coughing heavily at night, so the whole house is sleep-deprived. Despite this, the aunts dote on the little one with great patience, treating her like their most beloved child. Roma [i.e. the child's mother, an unidentified person] is least concerned about the child and her illness. I hope everything will return to normal in a day or two because the little one hasn't had a fever since yesterday. Other than that, all's the same with us. How's Ms Sophie doing? Have you visited her? We're keen to hear news about her. Warm greetings and kisses. LP
