Letter to Tadeusz Perl

part of the collection

A letter from the father to his son, annotated by Tadeusz Perl's friend at the time, Pesa Frydlender.

Father's substantive letter, related to journalism (especially supporting his son's work during this period, associated with articles written by him for other periodicals, later also with texts for “Głos Gospodarczy” (the “Economic Voice”) founded by Perl in Warsaw at that time).

A brief annotation by Frydlender, announcing further correspondence. Many of the author's letters have survived in this collection and constitute a very interesting source: they cover moral, economic (a young person starting her professional activity), social and political topics (especially in letters related to the elections just before the war in Poland); they show the pre-war legal environment and its functioning. It is also interesting to note that Frydlender gives a different perspective on some aspects of the topics raised by other correspondents (Leon Perl and especially Seweryn Tross).

Pesa Frydlener (1909-1980), after the war Paulina Kern, survived the war in the Soviet Union. Between 1946 and 1962 she served as, among other positions, an assessor (1946), an assistant public prosecutor (1946-1947) and a deputy public prosecutor at the Regional Court Prosecutor's Office in Szczecin (1947-1949). Her last letters to Perl, who was at that time moving from France to Poland, come from this Szczecin period. It is likely that later, in Warsaw, Tadeusz Perl and Kern no longer maintained relations. In Warsaw, Kern served as a deputy public prosecutor at the Regional Court Prosecutor's Office and a deputy public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal Prosecutor's Office (1950), then as a deputy public prosecutor at the General Prosecutor's Office (1950-1962), in the Special Department until 1952. She has gone down in history as a figure from Stalin's political trials against the anti-communist opposition; among other things, she was the prosecutor of General Emil “Nil” Fildorf. Dismissed on charges of anti-party activity, she eventually left for the UK in 1968 with her husband Karol Kern, and died in 1980 (according to some sources in the UK, according to others in Jerusalem).

Content of the father's letter to his son (spelling and punctuation have been updated):

My Dear! I spoke with Szwalbe [Natan Szwalbe, editor of “Nasz Przegląd” (the “Our Review”), see https://sztetl.org.pl/en/node/22520] today. Tomorrow, he's publishing your article (4th this month) and with this he's apparently already out of them, except for the article for the jubilee issue. Sz. expects further articles from you, he's particularly interested in Morgenthau's [US Secretary of the Treasury] stunt (dollar – francs), for this issue, I suppose, you can find a lot of material locally. The 35 zlotys hasn't yet been transferred to the shipping line. I think it'd be advisable for you to write to them regarding this matter. Have you found out locally whether Mr G. has left and to where – it would be good to establish this. I look forward to receiving news and material for the G[łos] Gosp[odarczy] (the “Economic Voice”). Best regards and kisses

Leon

Have you received the money order from the Polish Bank (Tow.B.Kred.) yet?

Annotation by Pesa Frydlender:

Dear Tadzik, I've received the card, thank you for remembering about me. Work is going well, I'm watching over your matters, I'll write you [...] [illegible] Pest.
