Letter to Tadeusz Perl

Letter from the mother to her son on a postcard.

Monday

Dear Tadziulek!

We've had this dreadful fog here for a few days, and it's been quite disheartening, especially for me. So today, I've decided to lift my spirits by going to the cinema for a cheerful comedy they're playing at Rialto, titled 'Three Men in the Snow'. I've been playing a bit of carioka and occasionally poker – that's how life goes by. You might be surprised that Jadzia wrote to you, but I think it's only fair that you write back to them as well. Staś [Wohl, husband of Jadwiga née Perl] has received an offer for a new film, but as always, they are tight on money. Critics unanimously praise Staś's cinematography, recently in Wiad[omości] Liter[ackie] (the “Literary News”). Zahorska [Stefania, one of the most prominent pre-war film critics – ed.] gave a very good review.

Why don't you want to go out with anyone? I think you're making a mistake (you make things up).

Tadziulek, I have to ask, do you get your shoes repaired? And what about the pyjamas? Have you bought them[.]

I sent you some chocolate today, and tomorrow I'll send you a piece of sausage – let me know if it's useful, and if you like it, I'll do it more often!

Get yourself some warm gloves!

Warmest kisses

Melcia.
