Letter to an unknown addressee

part of the collection

Letter from Janina Puncuch to her sister, brother-in-law and nephew on 3 pages. From the body of the letter (original spelling): “I can finally talk with you honestly and tell you all about us and our loved ones. First of all, I have to tell you that Franuś was in Warsaw for 3 days, sent there on a special train from Berlin together with diplomats. All our loved ones are alive! We had messages from Władek and Lolek, who are on the Russian side. Even all our apartments are fine, which is a lot, as 35% of the houses are completely burnt down. We left with the diplomats on September 21, and we went through hell living in the legation’s premises, mostly in the basement or in the corridor. We slept in our clothes on the floor, i.e. on mattresses, because in the room it was very dangerous. Shrapnels were flying through the air. But even that was all heaven compared to what was happening during the 3 days following our departure. Poor Warsaw suffered the most and our Loved Ones there.”
