The scene depicts the entrance gate of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp with the inscription in German 'Arbeit macht frei' (work makes free), with camp prisoners climbing up it, led by angels. The depiction symbolically refers to the biblical patriarch Jacob's dreamed ladder, depicted by Lili Ratner in her work 'Jacob's Ladder' (MPOLIN-M1363). JO
