Mahzor (Safa brura)

Mahzor. Safa Brura (Hebrew: Prayer Book. Clear Language) for the three pilgrimage festivals: Sukkot, Pesach (Passover), Shavuot, published by Rabbi Avraham Kahan, Warsaw (39 Nalewki Street, ul. Nalewki 39) in the year 5697 according to the simple calculation (i.e., 1937).

The Mahzor from the Education and Museum Centre "Świętokrzyski Sztetl" collection is entirely printed in Hebrew and consists of 432 pages. However, the pagination inside the binding is discontinuous. The paper is white, very thin (vellum-like) with low density, and the black printing has a varied composition in terms of font style and size. Parts of the block are sewn together with thread (likely silk) and bound in a uniform cover covered with dark brown leather. Inside the cover, there is a white paper insert connecting the book with the cover. On the front cover, there is a blind embossed ornament with a grotesque character and plant motif. On the book's spine, there are visible traces of four bands and gold embossing.

The mahzor (Hebrew: cycle) is a holiday prayer book. It contains a set of prayers intended to be recited during one of the major Jewish holidays. It includes not only the basic liturgy but also various piyyutim, i.e. liturgical poems. Most of the mahzors contain only texts, without musical notation. The melodies, sometimes of ancient origin, were transmitted orally.
