"The Mandolinist"

Like the "Little Drummer" or the composition "In a March" with a soldier playing the accordion, "The Mandolinist" belongs to the group of lithographs showing legionaries with musical instruments. Unlike other, more sketch-like lithographs, the colours of the work depicting the mandolinist are more intense, and patches of colour fill the contour more tightly. The caption indicates that the drawing was made in Volhynia near Kostiuchnowka, several months before the bloodiest of the Legion's battles. | AT
