Marian Małowist, 1984

Gierałtowski, Krzysztof (1938- )

Marian Małowist (1909–1988) was an excellent historian, an outstanding expert on the Middle Ages, a Holocaust survivor. During the war, in the Warsaw ghetto, he taught at middle school courses. In August 1942, when the transportation of the Warsaw Jews to the death camp in Treblinka was underway, Małowist worked in Toebens' sheds. His wife, who suffered from typhus, was too weak to escape, was caught, and died in Treblinka. Then Małowist decided to escape from the ghetto. Until the end of the war, he hid in the village of Jabłoń in Podlasie (Magdalena Grochowska, Wytrąceni z milczenia (Shaken out of Silence), Warsaw 2005, p. 140). From his studies, Małowist was associated with the University of Warsaw; he lectured there after World War II., One of the professor's students, Adam Manikowski wrote about his teachers: "I remember that in the eyes of my generation, such unquestionable authorities were: Stanisław Herbst, Stefan Kieniewicz, Marian Małowist and Tadeusz Manteuffel. In them we saw our ideals of scholars; they were for us models of moral attitudes; they finally took the problematic role of teachers of righteousness and courage, so needed by our generation lost in the nightmare of March 1968."

Krzysztof Gierałtowski portrayed Marian Małowist in 1984, in the professor's apartment in the Old Town of Warsaw.
