Market Square and Town Hall in Tarnów

Vogel, Zygmunt (1764-1826)

The watercolour Market Square and Town Hall in Tarnów made by Zygmunt Vogel in 1800, is a veduta depicting the buildings of the Tarnów market square. In the center stands the characteristic building of the Renaissance and Mannerist town hall with a high attic decorated with blind windows and mascarons, and a tower in the north-west corner. At the top of the tower there is the coat of arms of the Sanguszko Dukes (the then owners of Tarnów), which is the one of Lithuanian Pogonia. The town hall itself is visible from the south elevation. To the left and right of it, the western and eastern frontages of the market square are visible. In the background, near the left edge of the image field, one can also see the Tarnów cathedral. In addition to the architecture, an important role in the landscape is played by numerous figures placed both in the foreground and background. The lower right corner of the composition depicts Hieronim Sanguszko on a chestnut horse. Behind him, a man dressed as a Hungarian pandur is riding on a gray horse. The riders are heading towards a group of people, among whom three Jews with long, gray beards and wearing dark coats can be spotted. This is the oldest known depiction of Tarnów Jews and the town hall. In the lower right corner of the painting is the signature: "S. Vogel 1800".
