Matzeva fragment

A small fragment of a tomb stele (matzeva), in the form of a vertical, rectangular slab with a bas-relief inscription. The Hebrew epitaph is only partially preserved, and it is not possible to read basic information about the deceased person. The verb form and possessive pronoun indicate that it is about a man. Four short phrases have survived:

"[...] [he followed] righteousness and charity [...]

[...] he was hospitable

[...] with a kind face

[...] his heart [...]."

The item was donated to the collection of the Jędrzejów Museum by Klaudia Kwiecińska of Jędrzejów. It was found in the vicinity of the railway station in Jędrzejów in May 2014. It was likely unearthed by a construction crew that was carrying out sewer system modernization in that area. It probably comes from the Jewish cemetery in Piaski, nearby Jędrzejów. During World War II, the road in the vicinity of the station was reinforced using matzevot, including those from that location.
