Medal of the High Commission for Israelite Matters in the Netherlands

Round tin medal. On the obverse, there is an allegorical representation: a broken fluted column on a rectangular plinth with a Star of David inscribed in a panel. A lit oil lamp is standing in the column. On the right, there is a burly tree leaning behind the column; it has sprawling branches with lancet-shaped leaves. The Tablets of the Law are propped against the tree trunk. Behind them, there is a weaved beehive with bees exiting from it. On the left, there is a lion pictured in profile, in a one-third view, holding an oval shield with the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with its right paw. Above the representation, along the rim, there is an inscription: “KONINKLYKE BESLUITEN VAN 8 MAART 1836 N 23 EN 29 APRIL 1836 N 84”. Another inscription is placed under the representation, in smaller letters: “STEIN INV. I. P. SCHOUBERG F”. On the reverse, there is an image of a laurel wreath with a band tied across its bottom part, separated with a rosette – a rose flower – in the centre top. Around the wreath, at the rim, there is an inscription: “TOEGEWEZEN DOOR DE HOOFD-COMMISSIE TOT DE ZAKEN DER ISRAELITEN”.

The item forms part of the prewar collection of the National Museum of Przemyśl. Due to missing inventory documentation it has been impossible to determine how it became property of the Museum.
