Mikveh in Praga district (Warsaw)

Photographic documentation of the site

The mikveh in Praga district of Warsaw was built between 1911-1914 according to Naum Hornstein's project. The building, veneered with red brick, has two wings: a front one and a west one which, together with a crosswise annex, surround a courtyard on three sides. In the front part there are two floors. The decorative elements – cornices, window frames and pilasters – are made of plaster imitating stone. Unfortunately, the attic with pedestals and balustrades was not preserved. The front elevation of the ground floor of the west wing is made of ordinary red brick. The corners of the elevation and the avant-corps were decoratively made with pilasters topped with pinnacles. Inside you can find elements of its former design: flooring, marble staircase. It should be emphasised that this is the only such building in Warsaw. Today, the building is owned by the Jewish Community of Warsaw which made it available for the seat of the Multicultural Humanistic High School named after Jacek Kuroń (Wielokulturowe Liceum Humanistyczne im. Jacka Kuronia). The building also comprises the seat of the Polish Jewish Youth Organization (Żydowska Ogólnopolska Organizacja Młodzieżowa – ZOOM)
