Mill and Gallows

Bok, Teodor (1947-2007)

part of the collection

The small sculpture by Teodor Bok Mill and Gallows recalls associations with the past, with the Middle Ages, or rather, with its depictions in movies. Pop culture for Bok was an important source of inspiration, as it was for this sculpture – which is a depiction of a medieval borough enclosed by walls with a high tower topped by a pointy gabled roof, a cottage and an outhouse with a single sloping roof attached to it. The play with details (open windows in the buildings) and with the material is noticeable. The whole construction is made of wood, just like the artist’s other works, covered in patina and gold-plated.

The carelessness of this historic image is disturbed by a beam placed crosswise between the tower and the roof, with a loop hanging down. Who are these gallows waiting for?
