A depiction of the biblical scene from the Book of Exodus - the Second Book of Moses, in which God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. The Decalogue, in Jewish tradition known as the Ten Statements, is a set of precepts and prohibitions that form the basis of Jewish and Christian morality. It was offered to the prophet, the leader of the Israelites, after they were led out of Egypt, on their way to Canaan. According to the Old Testament, this took place on Mount Sinai, where God offered Moses two stone tablets of commandments and made a covenant with the Israelites. However, the first tablets were shattered by the prophet in anger when he saw his people worshipping a golden calf at the foot of the mountain. After punishing the idol worshippers, Moses again went to the top of Sinai, where this time he wrote down the commandments dictated by God on stone tablets with his own hands. He then ordered the creation of the Ark of the Covenant, in which the stone tablets were kept until the destruction of the first Temple of Jerusalem. JO
