The German concentration camp in Lublin, known as "Majdanek", was established by a decision of Heinrich Himmler. During a visit to Lublin in July 1941, Himmler gave the commander of the SS and police in the Lublin district, Odil Globocnik, the task of building a camp for 25-50,000 prisoners. The camp was intended to constitute a reservoir of free labour needed for plans to build a Germanic empire in the East.
