The Old Jewish cemetery in Lublin

Photographic documentation of the site

The Old Jewish cemetery is located on a woody hill called Grodzisko, which had military and defensive purpose until the end of the 10th century. The history of the cemetery begins in the first half of the 16th century. Although a royal decree allowing the Jews to use a part of the hill as a cemetery dates back to 1555, this year does not mark the establishment of the necropolis. The fact that the oldest remaining tombstone bears the date 1541 means that the document only legally authorized the current state of affairs. Over time the cemetery covered the whole hill.
