Paving stones from Szeroka Street in Lublin

Szeroka Street, also known as Żydowska Street, was the centre of the Jewish district in Lublin's Podzamcze, which no longer exists. It ran on the site of today's Zamkowy Square and reached Ruska Street near the Orthodox Church. The only remnant of the street is a water well that stands in the manoeuvring area of a bus station. In March and April 1942, most of the inhabitants of Szeroka Street were deported to the extermination camp in Belzec. House after house was demolished, sacred books, furniture and mere mementos of human life were destroyed. The entire district, and its most important street, turned into rubble.

The presented stones were excavated during the renovation of the present-day pavement in the area where Szeroka Street was located before the World War II.
