Photo of the Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn

A black and white photograph of a fragment of the Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn (Zamość county) taken on 6 October 1970. The author is W. Głodzik. The print is made on glossy paper in a 17.8 cm x 13 cm format.

The photograph shows nine matzevot in the form of sandstone stelae placed in the ground - four of them are preserved undamaged (three with a segmental arch, one with a semicircle), the rest are missing their upper fragments. There are Hebrew inscriptions on the two most visible and fully preserved gravestones surrounded by decorations: images of columns with an overhanging arch. The photo was taken from the eastern side, as the matzevot are placed on the Jewish cemetery in a way that the inscriptions face east - towards Jerusalem. Trees and bushes are visible in the background. The Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn was a burial place from the first half of the 16th century until the Holocaust.
