Photograph of artwork – Samuel Szczekacz, "Typographic study".

part of the collection

"Kompozycja unistyczna" ["Unist composition"], a lithograph from Samuel Szczekacz's 1938 "Teka malarska" [Paintings Portfolio] (Futurum Printing House, Łódź), also reproduced in the journal "Forma" (1938, no. 6, p. 25), next to Szczekacz's text "System kompozycyjny…" [Composition system...]. The "paintings portfolio" consists of black and white and colour lithographs on one-sided chalk-surfaced paper. The number of lithographs in the portfolio is unknown. It is a series of unist compositions, individual in form, often with labyrinthine motifs and repeated in various colour variations (in shades of yellow, dark blues and black), a composition of letters (minuscule) forming a labyrinth, identical, strong, working with a compact structure. According to Janina Ładnowska, the artist crossed out the letters by hand (J. Ładnowska, "Samuel Szczekacz/Samuel Zur – uczeń – kontynuator – artysta", in: Sztuka w Łodzi 2, ed. M. Wróblewska-Markiewicz, Łódź 2003, pp. 231–240).

The "paintings portfolio" is among others in the collection of the Museum of Art in Łódź. This copy contains 16 colour lithographs of various sizes. The portfolio consists of two "Neoplastic Compositions", one "Cubist and Neoplastic work", ten "Cubist Compositions" and three "Unist Compositions". The portfolio has its doublet, which differs slightly in the colours of individual prints. | RP
