Photograph of a certificate copy

The photograph of a copy of a certificate from the Association of Art and Cultural Historians confirming that "outstanding art historian" Szymon Zajczyk was taken away from his home at Nowogrodzka Street on 27 May 1944 by the Gestapo and since then all trace of him has disappeared. The document signed by Stanisław Lorentz, President of the Association and at the same time Director of the National Museum in Warsaw, and Secretary General Krystyna Sroczyńska, was most probably issued in 1950 at the request of Natalia Zajczyk. | Basia Temkin-Bermanowa also wrote about the tragic events in Nowogrodzka Street in her diary (entry from 3 June 1944): "The family of Zaj[czyk Szymon] and Rysio [Henryk Słobodzki] (...) seeped in. Dora [actually Natalia - R.P.] Z[ajczyk?] managed to pull her out after some effort, because she consistently pretended that those men were foreign tenants whose origin she did not know. The child [Zosia - R.P.] was not taken away, so half of the family [is] saved. As for the others, there is little hope that they will be rescued, but maybe for the time being they will be saved from death by being sent to some camp. (Basia Temkin-Bermanowa, Dziennik z podziemia (The Journal from the Underground), Warsaw 2000, p. 45).| Renata Piątkowska
