Photograph of Forteczna Street in Tarnów

A photograph of Forteczna Street in Tarnów. A Jew wearing a gaberdine and a shtreimel on his head passes through the brick arched gate. In the background, on both sides of a narrow cobblestone street, tenement houses are visible. Life goes on in the street, and several figures are visible in the background. Forteczna Street is part of the oldest district where Jewish settlement in the city was concentrated. The buildings are very distinctive: narrow passages between buildings and small courtyards. Jews were present in Tarnów practically from the beginning of its foundation. Like every ethno-religious group, they created a specific, unique environment.
